The Raspberry Pi 5 introduces the RP1 I/O controller chip — designed entirely in-house by Raspberry Pi Ltd — handling USB 3.0, PCIe 2.0, MIPI camera, and GPIO peripherals independently of the BCM2712 application processor. This architectural separation eliminates the I/O bandwidth contention that bottlenecked previous models. For physics applications: real-time data acquisition at 3.3 V/3.3 MHz GPIO sampling, camera-based interferometry (HQ camera module), spectroscopy via USB ADCs, or as a data logger for any instrument with a serial or I²C interface. The RP1 also provides a PIO state machine for custom protocol implementations.
