Potassium Iodide Tablets 130 mg — Thyroid Radiation Protection (14-count)
Radioactive iodine-131 decays with a 8-day half-life and concentrates in the thyroid gland — saturating it with stable KI before exposure blocks uptake with the precision of competitive inhibition.
In a nuclear or radiological event, the thyroid gland acts as an iodine sink, readily absorbing both stable and radioactive iodine (¹³¹I) from the blood. Administering potassium iodide (KI) saturates thyroid iodine receptors with non-radioactive ¹²⁷I, competitively preventing the uptake of ¹³¹I by the simple principle of mass action. This is the only proven prophylactic for thyroid radiation exposure recommended by the World Health Organization and Health Canada. Effective when taken within 24 hours of exposure.
