Polarized light is the key to understanding reflection, glare, liquid crystals, stress birefringence, and atmospheric optics.

Light from the sun scattered at 90° is nearly 100% polarized — you can verify this with two polarizers. Rotate one 90° relative to the other and they become opaque: this is Malus's law. The same principle drives LCD displays, polarized sunglasses, and optical mineralogy. One sheet becomes a pair of crossed polarizers; add a stressed plastic object between them and watch strain patterns emerge in brilliant colour.
