The sand grains are coated with a hydrophobic silica compound that creates a surface energy barrier. Water molecules prefer bonding to each other rather than the sand surface, so a thin air film forms around every grain underwater. It's the same chemistry used in waterproof fabrics, non-stick cookware, and self-cleaning glass — just visible at the scale of a handful of sand.

Pour it into water and watch it form an air bubble. Shape it underwater into sculptures. Pull it out: bone dry, every time.
